MANAMA: Alwaleed Philanthropies (AP), chaired by HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz AlSaud, was recognized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for its provision of aid to Syrian refugees.
During a ceremony held for the occasion at the foundation’s headquarters in Riyadh, Khaled Khalifa, Regional Representative to the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries, presented HRH Prince Alwaleed with an award and certificate of acknowledgement. The award recognizes Alwaleed Philanthropies’ commitment to providing vital disaster aid and supporting civilians in conflict zones. Donations made by His Royal Highness were used to provide food, shelter, education and medical services to those in need.
Her Royal Highness Princess Lamia bint Majed AlSaud, Secretary General, and Ms. Nauf Al Rawaf, Executive Manager of Global Initiatives from Alwaleed Philanthropies were among those who attended the ceremony. Ms. Amal AlAmri, Private Sector Partnerships Officer, represented the UNHCR.
Alwaleed Philanthropies has provided support to Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) since the very start of the crisis in 2011. The relief effort was launched in collaboration with ‘Nulabi Al-Neda’, Regional Food Bank and Save the Children. Through this collaboration, the foundation provided life-saving aid during the winter period to refugees suffering from harsh weather conditions in Lebanon and Jordan. The initiative provided refugees with food and shelter, along with medical services to prevent the spread of disease.
Alwaleed Philanthropies partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to launch an innovative digital campaign, and an urgent call to action aimed at the international community, to protect displaced Syrians and refugees in the winter. The ‘Tweet for Heat’ campaign shed light on the life-threatening weather conditions millions of refugees and internally displaced persons face, due to scarce resources and the use of makeshift shelters.
Over 4.6 million refugees, half of whom are children, are dispersed across three continents, and struggle with temperatures as low as -10º (C) while searching for warmth and safety. The “Tweet for Heat” campaign aimed to improve these conditions by providing shelter and warm blankets to millions of refugees at risk of hypothermia.
For over 37 years, Alwaleed Philanthropies has supported and initiated projects in over 124 countries regardless of gender, race, or religion. We collaborate with a range of philanthropic, government, and educational organizations to combat poverty, empower women and youth, develop communities, provide disaster relief and create cultural understanding through education. Together, we can build bridges for a more compassionate, tolerant, and accepting world.
