Manama: As authorities in the UAE put a ban on the sale of US eggs on Thursday, consumers in Bahrain are still awaiting an official position on the US imported eggs being sold in the local markets.
The UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has issued a circular to ensure that the country’s markets are free of salmonella contaminated eggs originating from a farm in the US state of North Carolina.
The24X7News Bahrain (www.twentyfoursevennews.com) has contacted the concerned authorities who were unable to make any comment on the US eggs contamination as the matter is being handled by different authorities from different ministries.
The UAE decision follows a warning issued by the US Food and Drug Administration and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention regarding illnesses traced back to the Rose Acre egg production farm in Hyde County.
The24X7News Bahrain had reported in February that Bahrain had emerged the top US eggs consuming nation in MENA region, which grew 1713 percent in value in 2017 over 2016.
Middle Eastern consumers are showing a fast-growing appetite for eggs. According to the latest data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), US egg imports to the MENA (Middle East North Africa) region grew 73 percent in USD value in 2017 over the imports in 2016. This represents a volume growth of 88 percent for US table eggs and 83% for US egg products.
