MANAMA: Newsdesk, Haitham bin Tariq bin Taymoor became the Sultan of Oman, succeeding Sultan Qaboos bin Said who was laid to rest on Saturday morning hours after his demise.
The Defence Council announced the appointment of Sultan Haitham during a session attended by senior state officials after it opened a letter by Sultan Qaboos bin Said naming his successor.
The council on Saturday morning requested the Ruling Family council to convene and choose a successor in accordance with the 1996 statute that requires the ruling family to choose a successor within three days of the throne becoming vacant.
The ruling family council asked the Council to open the letter and take the procedures to install the person recommended by Sultan Qaboos.
The Defence Council opened the letter and announced that Haitham bin Tariq is the country’s new sultan.
