Manama: Mahmood Rafique, Editor: With the evolving technology, cybersecurity poses a major challenge to the world that needs to be addressed collectively from a platform like the United Nations.
Chang-ki Park, Senior Fellow, Task Force on Cybersecurity, at the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (CPUNGA), on sidelines of the CPUNGA’s first meeting told The24X7News (www.twentyfoursevennews.com) in Bahrain on Monday.
“Cybersecurity is a global challenge, and it needs to be addressed through concerted efforts ideally from a platform like the United Nations, which unfortunately at present we do have any platform or strategy at the UN level,” Chang-ki Park, said, who also briefed the delegates through a presentation on Tuesday during deliberations of the ongoing CPUNGA meeting.
He added that hackers are targeting the ICT infrastructures, targeting public and individuals, privacy breach incidents, compromising the electronic information, personal bank accounts, crypto currency, and credit cards to name a few.
He said that in the backdrop of the evolving technology and innovation, there has been increase all in cyber-attacks across the borders and needs to be tackled swiftly through a wider participation collectively as international cooperation remains crucial element to keep the world safe. Currently, no global organization exists to tackle cybersecurity and its related crimes.
“The UN should come up with some global approach to have comprehensive strategy to thwart such threats. From now on the danger of cybercrime will be getting serious and imminent, thanks to surge and growth in Internet of Things (IoT). Artificial Intelligence is also expanding, in future computer hacking will be a normal means the basic privacy for the end users of technology presents a bleak picture without a global strategy to make it safe,” he said.
The CPUNGA meeting, for the first time outside, the United States, offers an opportunity to the participants to deliberate on the global issues, conflicts and challenges faced by the world community.
The ongoing war in Ukraine and Cybersecurity are among the major topics being discussed by the participants of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (CPUNGA) kicked off in Bahrain on Monday.
