The SPE-Bahrain organised a presentation entitled “E&P Applications of Fiber-Optic Technologies” as part of the Distinguished Lecturer Programme, arranged by SPE International. The presentation was delivered by Dennis Dria, petroleum technology advisor for Myden Energy Consulting.
The presentation was held at Bapco Club in Awali. The presenter said that fiber-optic technology, although only introduced for use in Exploration and Production well and reservoir monitoring in the last 10 years, it has blossomed into a highly reliable set of tools that frequently offer monitoring capability not obtainable with traditional sensors, which are either permanently installed or run as logging tools or via other intervention methods.
This presentation also provided an overview of optical sensing techniques and sensors such as distributed temperature sensing (DTS), optical pressure gauges, distributed strain measurement for integrity monitoring and distributed acoustic sensing. Along with this Mr Dennis gave a brief introduction to different fiber-optic measurement technology, and made a case for the application of these in the E&P industry, and provided examples to demonstrate their value.
Upon the conclusion of the presentation, SPE-Bahrain Chairman Faisal Al Mahroos thanked Dria for the valuable presentation and presented him with a commemorative gift. SPE-Bahrain Programme Chairman Hisham Zubari also thanked Dria for delivering his key lecture and thanked all participants for attending the lecture.
