The Interior Ministry has turned down a request submitted by Al-Wefaq to stage a human-chain on Tuesday on the main highway linking Manama and the rest of the country.
Public Security Chief Major General Tarak Mubarak bin Daina issued an edict forbidding the rally for failing to meet legal terms stipulated in law decree 18 for 1973 on public meetings, demonstrations and rallies.
Three citizens had notified the Northern Police Directorate of Al-Wefaq plans to stage the human-chain on a vital highway in Manama. In a statement bin Daina described the type and location of the rally as being inappropriate for security reasons.
“The rally would derail public security and block the smooth flow of the traffic, which lead to road congestions and disrupt people’s interests”, he said.
He pointed out that organisers and security authorities would find it difficult to control the human chain and avert any derailment.
He also gave directives to inform the oganisers of the ban and undertake necessary security measures to enforce the decision, in bid to maintain public order and protect public and private properties.
