The National Commission in Charge of the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) is committed to implementing BICI recommendations fully and according to international standards and practices, as outlined in the BICI final report and as stipulated by the Royal Order, the panel Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh has pledged.
Al Saleh also explained that the Commission is studying BICI recommendations carefully in order to determine the best mechanisms to implement them.
He also noted that the latest proposals approved by the National Commission regarding the media sector concerning articles (a) and (b) of clause 1724 of BICI report stem from international norms and standards emphasizing the need to guarantee freedoms of expression and opinion for all, and protect media establishments’ professional ethics, given their essential role in enhancing the democratic reform process.
In a statement issued today, Al Saleh stressed that the Commission’s proposals are also in line with the constitutional fundamentals, as the best way to achieve the interests of the nation and the citizens, in order to upgrade the media profession in the kingdom, reiterating the panel’s unwavering belief in the pivotal role played by mass media in ensuring a better and more ambitious future for the country through raising the citizens’ awareness and updating them on what is going on their nation.
Al Saleh asserted that the National Commission, in line with its commitment to transparency, will keep the public well informed on its decisions and proposals, as well the executive steps taken to implement the BICI recommendations, highlighting the importance of the on-going partnership between the panel and mass media regarding the daily work of the Commission.
Al Saleh also called upon all Bahraini people, regardless of their sects, segments or beliefs, to dedicate themselves in the service of the cherished nation, adding that the Commission members will do their utmost to assume their national responsibilities in order to cement national unity, achieve reconciliation between all members of the Bahraini society and open a new chapter full of hope and national action so as to enable the kingdom to continue its landmark reform march.
“The National Commission is fully aware of the duties entrusted to the media cadres and establishments and is fully confident that they are capable to activate their role in embracing all opinions of the Bahraini citizens or political sides in order to achieve domestic peace and enhance social development,” he said.
He also conveyed the Commission members’ appreciation of the tremendous efforts exerted by all national media cadres in the kingdom, and praise of the steps taken by the official media to implement the concerned BICI recommendations, adding that the National Commission expects the media bodies to adhere to professional and ethical standards and commit themselves to credibility and neutrality, in light of the responsible freedoms of opinion and expression guaranteed in the kingdom’s Constitution and National Action Charter.
He also pointed out that free and impartial media, a basic pillar in all societies seeking democratic development, is an effective partner in safeguarding national security and stability, consolidating national cohesion and national belonging and promoting love and solidarity among members of the one-family Bahraini society.
