HRH the Crown Prince said that Bahrain had made significant strides in reform, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad, since 2001’s National Action Charter (NAC). He outlined how the core principles of the Charter, which had received a 98.4% approval in a popular referendum, informed the Kingdom’s ongoing programme of reform.
HRH the Crown Prince stressed the continued importance of enhancing accountability, equality and transparency in the actions of government as part of this process, in line with the clear principles of the NAC.
HRH the Crown Prince updated Secretary Kerry on progress towards full implementation of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) report recommendations, and the ongoing National Consensus Dialogue. He emphasized that this process, which necessitates agreement by all parties, was vital to sustainable political development in Bahrain. HRH the Crown Prince expressed concern that continued active and tacit support of violence would only serve to undermine reform and thwart political progress.
HRH the Crown Prince and Secretary Kerry both highlighted the importance of the U.S.-Bahrain partnership as well as the mutual commitment to further strengthening these bilateral ties. Secretary Kerry also welcomed the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad in launching the National Dialogue. Both Secretary Kerry and HRH the Crown Prince agreed that all sides should contribute constructively to reconciliation, dialogue, and reform that meet the aspirations of all Bahrainis. Secretary Kerry reiterated the United States’ belief that all sides must reject violence and pursue actions that will contribute to Bahrain’s future growth and prosperity.
HRH the Crown Prince expressed his appreciation to the United States for its continued support to Bahrain’s programme of reform.
HRH the Crown Prince and Secretary Kerry went on to discuss a number of regional issues and strengthening the partnership between the two countries.
