MANAMA: Mahmood Rafique, Editor: As the World Weightlifting Championships Manama 2024 warp up on Sunday, all eyes are on Bahraini athlete Gor Minasyan, who is set to compete in the men’s over 109 kg category.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, has attracted 473 athletes from 92 countries, showcasing a remarkable display of talent and sportsmanship.
The championship, taking place at the venue across the Bahrain National Theater, promises an exhilarating finale featuring elite athletes, including Minasyan, an Olympic champion.

The Bahrain Weightlifting Federation, led by His Excellency Eshaq Ebrahim Eshaq, has received accolades for its exceptional organisation of the event, which has captivated audiences and participants alike.
In the men’s 102 kg category, Qatar’s Fars Ibrahim secured the silver medal with a total lift of 399 kg, while Artyom Antropov from Kazakhstan claimed gold with a total of 400 kg. Spain’s Marcos Ruiz took home bronze, lifting a total of 395 kg.
Uzbek champion Ruslan Nurudinov made headlines by winning gold in the 109 kg category, setting a world record with a total lift of 424 kg. Nurdinov’s remarkable performance included a 182 kg lift in the snatch and a 242 kg lift in the clean and jerk. Azerbaijan’s Dadash Dadashbayli, and Iran’s Mehdi Karami followed him, earning silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Sunday’s competitions will kick off at 11am with the women’s over 87 kg Group B events, followed by the men’s over 109 kg Group B. The spotlight will shift to the women’s Group A at 3pm and culminate with the men’s Group A at 5.30pm.
