MANAMA: Following a successful inaugural year, Hilton Bahrain has shown its continued commitment to the Green Ramadan initiative, reinforcing its activities for the second consecutive year.
In collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) West Asia, Winnow, and Goumbook, Hilton Bahrain is dedicated to minimizing food waste during the holy month while emphasizing the importance of local sourcing and responsible consumption.
As part of this initiative, Hilton Bahrain has formed a special partnership with the Bahrain Food Bank and Peninsula Farms. A dedicated corner at the Iftar showcases local produce sourced directly from Peninsula Farms, allowing guests to savor organic Bahrain produce while supporting local agriculture.
Research from UNEP West Asia indicates that food waste often surges during religious and social festivities, including Ramadan. Hilton Bahrain is taking proactive measures to tackle this challenge, aligning with Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals, which aim to cut food waste sent to landfills by 50%.
To accurately measure and monitor food waste, Hilton Bahrain has implemented the Winnow system. This data-driven approach enables the hotel to identify areas for improvement and develop effective strategies to reduce waste. By closely monitoring food wastage, Hilton Bahrain is committed to making informed decisions that contribute to a sustainable food management system.
In addition to redistributing surplus food through the Bahrain Food Bank, Hilton Bahrain collaborates with Peninsula Farms to transform unavoidable food waste into nutrient-rich compost. This compost will enrich local soil, further supporting sustainable agriculture in the community.
“We are proud to be part of Hilton’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. When our guests experience our Iftar and Ghabga, they are not just enjoying a meal; they are becoming part of a worthy cause that reduces food waste and supports local communities. Through partnerships and collaborations, we are paving the way for a greener future,” Tamer Farouk, General Manager of Hilton Bahrain, expressed his enthusiasm for the enhanced Green Ramadhan initiative which concluded successfully second year in the row.
Hilton Bahrain invited guests to join in these efforts during Ramadan, enjoying delicious meals while making a positive impact on the environment and local communities.
