TRA attends ITU meetings on global ICT indicators, statistics

Manama: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) participated in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) 21st World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS-26) and the meetings of the Expert Group on Telecommunication/ICT Indicators (EGTI) and Expert Group on ICT Household Indicators (EGH) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Bahrain’s participation reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening ICT data and indicators as a foundation for evidence-based policymaking and sustainable digital transformation, while contributing its national perspective to the development of internationally harmonized approaches to measuring the evolving digital economy.

Held under the theme “Guiding digital policy through statistics,” the meetings brought together international experts and ITU Member States to advance methodologies for measuring connectivity and digital inclusion, as well as emerging areas including artificial intelligence, satellite broadband and 5G-Advanced. Discussions also addressed the development of indicators to assess the environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions of the ICT sector.

“Reliable and internationally comparable data is essential to understanding how the digital landscape is evolving and to making informed regulatory and policy decisions. Bahrain’s participation enables us to contribute our experience while learning from international best practices, particularly as new technologies such as AI, advanced mobile networks and satellite connectivity reshape the sector. Aligning with international measurement standards also ensures that Bahrain’s progress and investments in digital infrastructure are accurately reflected globally,” Philip Marnick, General Director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, said.

TRA’s engagement in the development and review of ICT indicators supports Bahrain’s alignment with international measurement standards and ensures that the Kingdom’s progress in telecommunications infrastructure, connectivity and emerging technologies is accurately represented. It also reinforces TRA’s commitment to forward-looking regulation and to strengthening Bahrain’s position as a competitive and advanced digital economy.
